In June 1979, a scientific society under the name Hellenic Society of Animal Production (HSAP) was established. The idea behind the creation of such a society, which would cover the field of animal science, matured during the 1970s as a result of organisational efforts on behalf of university education in animal science and the agrolivestock development which was realised in Greece and was forged from a need for substantial communication between international governmental and non-governmental organisations of animal production which have been regarded as pioneers in pushing forward science and praxis in the area of animal farming.

The founding members of HSAP

The hopes of animal scientists for the establishment of such a scientific society were achieved through the efforts of pioneers such as Profs. N. P. Zervas, P. Kalaissakis, J. Boyazoglu, the director of the Ministry of Agriculture Mr. A. Boubas, Dr. Michos of the Agricultural Bank and the late Prof. Ch. Skipitaris. These visionaries were joined by agriculturists and animal scientists from universities and from the private and public sectors who, together, became the founding members of the society and are forthwith listed alphabetically below:

The basic aims of the HSAP are the implementation and development of animal science which encompasses the sectors of genetic improvement, nutrition and feeding, reproduction, farming and management of all the terrestrial and aquatic organisms participating in the vast field of animal production.

In addition to these basic aims, the HSAP seeks the development and consolidation of ties between education, animal research and practical implementation, the elaboration of studies and submission of proposals, the organisation of scientific conferences and seminars on animal science-related themes, the publication of periodical journals featuring scientific research and articles of the society’s members and of other animal specialists, minutes of meetings, symposia and day-long conferences as well as of other independent issues. Naturally, the scientific activity of the HSAP is focused also on the study of problems specific to Greek animal husbandry.

Among the stated objectives of the HSAP are a closer co-operation with the Animal Production Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Bank, the National Institute of Agricultural Research and the Chamber of Agriculture. Of paramount importance to the HSAP is the participation of its members in international animal production bodies and other organisations (EAAP, FAO, ICAR, CIHEAM), its involvement in study committees and the organisation of scientific workshops and symposia of national and international significance.

Greece is represented in the European Association for Animal Production (EAAP) by the HSAP and the Ministry of Agriculture, the latter, with its Animal Production Services contributing substantially to the securing of funds and technical assistance towards a dynamic presence of the country in this important European animal production forum.
