Conferences

Beginning in 1980, the HSAP has been organising scientific meetings, symposia and day-long conferences in different parts of the country in order to encourage and forward the basic and applied animal research which is accomplished in animal production departments of the universities, the research stations of the National Research Institute in Agriculture as well as at the departments of animal production of the technological educational institutes. In addition, it has organised four international conferences in Thessaloniki and Athens.

1. Scientific meetings in different areas of Greece

During initial stages, those meetings included presentations mainly from university professors and other special scientists concerning topics of theoretical and applied animal husbandry. However, with the revival and reactivation of zootechnic research efforts, there became apparent a need for preliminary announcements and final results of research from the different zootechnical research centers and university laboratories of animal science orientation. And so, for a significant period of time hence, entire scientific presentations and agrolivestock studies of local character have been included in the HSAP conferences.

The HSAP, in its effort to cover a large part of the Greek area, has held scientific conferences in the following towns: Larissa (1980), Serres (1982), Thessaloniki (1983), Ioannina (1984), Thessaloniki (1986), Patra (1987), Xanthi (1990), Volos (1991), Athens (1992), Florina (1993), Larissa (1995), Lamia (1996), Pyrgos-Olympia (1997), Arta (1998), Chania (1999), Kalamata (2000), Drama (2001), Ioannina (2002), Karditsa (2003), Tripoli (2004), Veria (2005), Sparti (2006) Volos (2007), Nafplio (2009).

Furthermore, the society has held in Athens, in March 1998, a special conference on the Genetic Improvement of Farm Animals, the proceedings of which were submitted to the State to upgrade genetic improvement schemes in various categories of farm animals.

2. Symposia within the framework of the branch expositions AGROTICA and ZOOTECHNIA of the Helexpo Trade Fair of Thessaloniki

The HSAP, in order to update animal scientists, establish bonds between its members and to mainly inform the country’s livestock farmers, has held regular yearly symposia at the International Trade Fair of Thessaloniki within the framework of AGROTICA until 1998 and ZOOTECHNIA from the following year. The symposia featured the following central topics: 1st Dairy and Beef Farming (1987), 2nd Sheep and Goat Farming (1988), 3rd Swine Farming (1989), 4th Animal Feeds (1990), 5th Poultry Production (1991), 6th Biotechnology and Animal Production (1992), 7th Production of Quality Animal Products (1993), 8th Modern Traits in Milk and Meat production (1994), 9th Fish farming Units - Their Contribution to Animal Production (1995), 10th Sheep and Goat Farming (1996), 11th Modern Greek Animal Husbandry, 12th Greek Swine Farming (1998), 13th Organic Animal Husbandry (1999), 14th Implementation of the Results of Animal Science Research in Greek Animal Farming (2000), 15th Modern Animal Farming and the Human Nutritional Requirements (2002), 16th Animal Genetics (2005), and 17th Milk quality and safety - The last evolutions (2007).

3. Day-long conferences of local interest

More recently, the HSAP, in co-operation with various prefectures, adopted the practice of organising day-long scientific conferences with topics of strictly local animal-agricultural interest. The previously held local conferences are as follows: In 1997 in Kastania, Corinthia on the subject "Sheep and Goat Farming in Corinthia", in 1998 in Veria, Imathias, discussing "Beef Production in Imathia", in 1999 in Thessaloniki, regarding "Mountainous Animal Production, in 2001 in Arta on the subject "Poultry Production", in 2004 in Philippiada on the subject "Pig Production", and in 2005 in Kalloni (Lesvos) on the subject "Sheep Farming".

4. International animal production meetings and symposia organised by the HSAP in Greece

  • The 36th Annual Meeting of the European Association for Animal Production was organised by the HSAP and held under the sponsorship of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture in Kallithea-Halkidiki, between 30 September and 3 October 1985. The venue and accommodation selected for the conference was the hotel compound Athos Palace-Pallini Beach.

  • The International Symposium with the theme "Optimal Exploitation of Marginal Mediterranean Areas by Extensive Ruminant Production Systems" was organised by the HSAP in Thessaloniki 18-20 June, 1994 in collaboration with the EU (DG-VI), FAO, EAAP and CIHEAM. The symposium was held at the conference center of Thessaloniki’s International Trade Fair. Within the framework of the same organising effort, the following separate meetings of FAO, RNEA and CIHEAM were held: 1) Expert Consultation on Range-Dependent Small Ruminant Production Systems in the Near East 2) Meeting on the Subnetwork System of Production and 3) Technical Consultation of the European Co-operation Research Network on Sheep and Goat Production.

  • The 6th International Symposium on the Milking of Small Ruminants was held between 26 September and 1st October, 1998 in Kastri (Athens) at the Training Center of the Agricultural Bank of Greece. The symposium was organised by the HSAP in close co-operation with the International Scientific Committee on the Milking of Small Ruminants, sponsored by IAMZ-CIHEAM, FAO (REU/ESCORENA), EAAP and ICAR and held under the patronage of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture.

  • The international conference concerning "Organic Meat and Milk from Ruminants" which was organised jointly by the HSAP and the British Society of Animal Science and was held from 4-6 October, 2001 in Kastri (Athens) at the Agricultural Bank’s Training Center.

  • The International Symposium concerning the "Animal Production and Natural Resources Utilisation in the Mediterranean Mountain Areas", which was organised jointly by the HSAP, FAO, EAAP and CIHEAM and was held from 5-7 June 2003 in Ioannina, Greece, at the Hotel Du Lac Conference Centre.
