Globalisation and the Challenge of Animal Production, Thessalonika, Greece, May 2011



Challenges over food security, energy and food and climate change mean that Agriculture is back on the political agenda. It's also now a global affair. This topical conference will concentrate on Globalisation and the challenges facing animal production. Demand from developed and emerging countries for animal products is rapidly increasing and the time is right to consider how we can best meet these global demands.
The conference will have three main themes:

  1. The drivers of this globalisation
    This includes demand for animal products, including biofuels. changes in human populations and demands for animal products, demand and competition for land. Key speakers will give position papers on the where we will be in 2011 and their vision for 2020.
  2. Consequences of these drivers
    This will cover issues like animal movement and trade, production & availability of novel animal feedstuff's and novel animal products. The focus of these presentations will be on the consequences. challenges and opportunities that will result from the drivers.
  3. Solution to the consequences
    Speakers and delegates will discuss what information is needed to be able to develop the animal production systems that arise from the above drivers and their consequences. Specific questions covered will include:
    • What knowledge is required to reach appropriate solutions?
    • How we modify systems in order to meet demand?
    • What kind of animals should we be developing?

This event will be jointly organised by the Hellenic Society of Animal Production (HSAP) and the British Society of Animal Science (BSAS). The conference has the endorsement of EAAPand CIHEAM. The venue with be in the Chalkidiki region of Greece adjacent to the international airport at Thessalonika and with excel­lent road and rail links to Eastern Europe.
Submitted papers will be welcome. Delegates will include scientists across many disciplines, policy makers, and those involved in translating science into practice.
